Student & Job Shadowing Opportunities

Explore your interest in a health care career through our job shadowing program. We offer job shadowing opportunities at WellSpan hospitals in Adams and York counties.

Through shadowing, you’ll observe a professional in your field of interest to gain insight into the health care work environment and day-to-day operations.

Certain restrictions apply in some areas, and each location has different eligibility requirements. The job shadowing experience gives an overview of working in healthcare and is not intended to replace a for-credit internship or to fulfill clinical requirements.

Student and job shadowing opportunities

WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital

Job shadowing experiences are available for high school students in grades 11 or 12, college students and those considering career changes. Expect to be in an area for two to four hours per visit. Shadowing is limited to two observations a semester, for a total of 16 hours per year. Requests for additional shadowing hours will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

WellSpan Surgery & Rehabilitation Hospital

Job shadowing experiences are available for high school students in grades 11 or 12, college students and those considering career changes. Expect to be in an area for four to eight hours per visit. Shadowing is limited to one visit. Requests for additional shadowing hours will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Surgery/Rehab application

WellSpan York Hospital

Job shadowing experiences are available for high school graduates who are actively enrolled in a formal degree or certificate program in one of the areas offered. Shadowing observations are available in laboratory, imaging, nursing and rehabilitation medicine.

Job shadowing experiences are available for high school graduates by contacting the coordinator for WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital. Shadowing observations are available in various departments throughout the hospital.

Additional job shadowing requirements

To protect the privacy of our patients, you’ll be asked to sign a confidentiality statement as part of the job shadowing program.

Appropriate attire is required, and comfortable shoes are recommended.

Certain vaccines are required for your safety, as well as that of our patients. Employee health requirements will be shared after we receive your application.

For patient safety and security reasons, the shadowing program is not a “hands-on” experience.

To allow enough time for scheduling your shadowing opportunity, please submit your application at least four weeks before the date when you’d like to have your appointment.

If you’re unable to attend your shadowing appointment, please contact your shadowing program representative as soon as possible. Missed shadowing appointments not canceled ahead of time will not be rescheduled. Missed shadowing appointments for high school students will also be reported to the student’s guidance counselor.
